An orifice is a flat plate with a centrally drilled hole machined to a sharp edge. Orificemeter An orifice meter is a differential pressure flow meter which reduces the flow area using an orifice plate. That is, pass a known volume through the meter and note the reading in order to provide a standard for measuring other quantities. This devices measure bulk flow by determining pressure changes, as well as the Reynolds number of the flow rate. In order to use any of these devices for measurement it is necessary to empirically calibrate them. Step 1: Objective The objective of this experiment and your role at the company is to calibrate bulk-flow sensors such as the Venturi meter, orifice-plate meter, and the paddlewheel flowmeter. However, for smaller pipes orifice meter is a suitable choice. The Venturi is widely used particularly for large volume liquid and gas flows since it exhibits little pressure loss. For measuring flow in enclosed ducts or channels, the Venturi meter and orifice meters are more convenient and more frequently used. The Pitot-static is often used for measuring the local velocity in pipes or ducts. Venturi meter, orifice meter, and Pitot tube are widely used head flow meters in the industry. There are also differences in flow rate in both venturi tube and orifice plate flow rate in the orifice plate is higher than the venturi tube because the diameter of the area of the orifice plate is smaller than the venturi tube. Coefficient of discharge is the ratio of actual flow to the theoretical flow and makes allowances for stream contraction and frictional effects. It is proven when the time taken for the water to reach volume of 6 litres decreases. Rate of discharge from the constriction can be calculated by knowing this pressure reduction, the area available for flow at the constriction ,the density of the fluid and the coefficient of discharge C d. Water from the hydraulic bench enters the. From an energy balance as given by Bernoulli’s theorem, there must be a corresponding reduction in pressure. Apparatus: Figures 1 and 2 show the details of the apparatus for this experiment. Glasgow: National Engineering Laboratory. If a constriction is placed in a pipe carrying a stream of fuid, there will be an increase in velocity, and hence an increase in kinetic energy ,at the point of constriction. To obtain the method through precise traversing in the fan testing duct setup for different flow conditions, and to plot the nature of velocity profile. Determination of the effects of orifice plate geometry upon discharge coefficients. The pressure difference caused by the constriction is correlated to the flow rate using Bernoulli's theorem. Differential pressure type flow meters (Head flow meters) measure flow rate by introducing a constriction in the flow. Experiment No.3: Flow through orifice meter Background and Theory Flow meters are used in the industry to measure the volumetric flow rate of fluids.
